Overview of Summer Reading for kids infants – entering grade 5
Information from the Prince William County Public Library website
   http://www.pwcgov.org/government/dept/libraryformation

Your Summer Reading exploration starts now! Whether it’s taking a trip around the world, heading back through time, or launching into outer space, your Passport is your key to discovery. Tag us! #PWPLSsummer
How to participate:

  1. SIGN UP BEGINNING JUNE 1
  2. Pick up your Passport at any branch beginning June 20.
  3. Come in every week to tell us how you’re working toward your reading goal* and we’ll stamp your passport. If you wish to keep a log of books read, record them on your Passport, ask for a paper log, or enter them on the Summer Reading website and print it out at the end of the program. After five stamps, you receive a brand-new book to keep!
  4. Come in for all nine weeks—every stamp is a chance to win the grand prize drawing.
  5. Participate in a different weekly challenge each week for the chance to win additional coupons and prizes.

  6. Participant must be present at the library to receive a stamp or a prize.

                Montclair Summer Reading:
Each child will bring home a reading log and list of suggested summer reading books for his/her grade level in their 4th quarter report card.  Links to summer reading are also available on our school website.  Return the log to your teacher when you return to school in August for extra credit in reading!  (3 S+ or 3 As).  You may also turn in the Prince William County Public Library log as documentation.

Our library will be open during summer school on Tuesdays.
Tuesday, July 5th 10:00-11:30
Tuesday, July 12th 10:00-11:30
Tuesday, July 19th 10:00-11:30

Students who are participating in summer school will be able to check out books with their class on those days.  Students who are not participating in summer school may come to the library with a parent or guardian to check out books.  Stop by for some great summer reading!

                  READ, READ, READ

Along with summer skills practice that will be in every student’s report card, I’d like to remind you to make a schedule to include at least one hour of reading (3rd, 4th, and 5th graders should read 90 minutes a day) AND 1/2 hour of math facts reviewPersonal writings in a journal make a great keepsake of summer adventures and assist students’ practice of learned written language skills.  To find out more, please click:   Summer Practice

Too Much Televison
Children in the U.S. watch more than 19 hours of tele-vision per week. Not many of them adhere to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation to watch fewer than 2 hours per day. Known adverse effects of television include obesity, aggressive behavior, decreased physical activity, and attention problems. Television can also cause sleep disorders. Among school-aged children and adolescents, television is associated with poor sleeping habits and disordered sleep (late bedtimes and disturbances during sleep).  Among adolescents, high levels of television viewing might also lead to sleep problems in early adulthood.

Lost and Found
There are coats, sweatshirts, hats, lunchboxes and many other personal items in our Lost and Found.  At the end of each grading period, we will donate these items to a local charity.  The "Lost and Found" items are in the lobby and hung in the hallway by the cafeteria.  At the end of every quarter, unclaimed items are donated to needy families.  Take a minute and come in to search...you may find something that has been missing from your home.
